The Gunners are going into the New Year top of the Premier League table after solidifying their place with a win over Brighton on Saturday, New Year’s Eve at the Amex Stadium.
Arsenal defeated Brighton 4-2 after Brighton attempted to stage a dramatic comeback in the match that was quenched by VAR, who cancelled Brighton’s third goal for offside in the 90th minute of the game.
Bukayo Saka scored the early opener for the Gunners in the second minute, captain Martin Odegaard doubled the scoreline in the 39th minute and Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma put a goal at the back of the net for his side just at the edge of half time, 45′.
Arsenal came back strong in the second half with Eddie Nketiah netting in one for his team just after half time, 47′ and Gabriel Martinelli making it four for the Gunners with a superb strike in the 71st minute.
Evan Ferguson put in a second goal for Brighton, 77′, and their attempt at a third was cancelled by VAR for offside and was a relief to the Gunners.
The Gunners are now seven points clear at the top with 43 points and champions Manchester City sit second with 36 points.
Brighton and Hove Albion slide down on the league table to eighth place with 24 points.
