Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), is more determined than ever to ensure the country remains one.
He added that the indivisibility of the country must be maintained as the strength of the nation lies in its diversity.
Osinbajo also said there was a need to ensure that the labours of past heroes, especially those who paid the supreme prices are not in vain.
The vice president spoke at an interdenominational church service organised to mark the 2023 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Abuja on Sunday.
Represented by the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, George Akume, he urged the citizens to place the interest of the nation above all other sectional interests.
He said, “There is a need to place the unity of the nation above selfish/sectional interests by guarding our utterances and being accommodating to our diversity and
sensitive to the plight of others.
“We need to blur the lines across ethnic and religious divides through messages of tolerance for peace, unity, and progress of the country. This administration is determined more than ever to strengthen and promote the oneness and indivisibility of Nigeria because the strength of this great nation lies in our diversity.
“The first stanza of the national anthem says ‘the labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain’ cannot be overemphasised, and this is why we cherish the memory of these fallen heroes who planted the seeds of unity, peace and progress particularly those who made the supreme sacrifice before our independence during the First and Second World Wars and also in the unfortunate Civil War that followed.”
