A 25-year-old man, Funmilayo Asojo, was yesterday, remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Center by an Akure Magistrate Court for allegedly killing a security guard, Bamiduro Adewole, with a stone.
Asojo, also known as “Sharp Sharp,” who was arraigned before the court on a one-count charge of murder, was accused of killing Adewale, 59, while the deceased was attempting to settle dispute between the accused and his debtor over N700.
The accused was said to have committed the offence on December 28, 2022, at about 5.00 p.m., at Ute, in the Owo Local Council of Ondo State.
It was gathered that sympathisers immediately took the victim, who was in a pool of blood, to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead two days later.
The brother of the deceased, Mr. Adewole, who reported the incident to the police, said: “I was told that Asojo hit my brother’s head with a stone after he appealed to him not to join issues with his friend, who was owing him N700.
“I did not believe it until I saw Duro’s lifeless body at the mortuary. The accused is known all over the town.” The offence contravened Sections 319 and 355 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. 37, Vol. II, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
The police prosecutor, Augustine Omhenemhen, urged the court to remand the defendant, pending the outcome of advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The Magistrate, R. O. Yakubu, did not take the plea of the defendant for want of jurisdiction. Yakubu, therefore, ordered the remand of the defendant to the Olokuta Correctional Center, pending advice from the DPP.
She subsequently adjourned the case till March 19, 2023 for mention.
