Two persons on Friday night lost their lives after gunmen stormed the residence of the Labour Party (LP) House of Representatives candidate for Lere Federal Constituency, in Kaduna State, Suleiman Tambaya, at Gure Village in Lere Local Council of the state.
It was gathered that the incident occurred at about 10 pm Friday night when the House of Representatives candidate was away at a political meeting in Kaduna, the state capital.
It would be recalled that the attack is barely three months after gunmen in November 2022 killed the LP women leader, Victoria Chimtex in her residence in Kaura Local Council of the state.
Speaking with journalists on the matter, yesterday, Tambaya said but for divine intervention and the prompt response from the members of the community and local vigilante, it would have been a “different story by now.”
He also said that the police in Lere responded to the distressed call.
Tambaya said: “I was planning to go home on Friday, but when I spoke to our governorship candidate, he asked that I see him. As a result, I could not go home again.
“At about 10 pm (Friday), I was told that about seven armed men came to my house in the village (Gure), asking about my whereabouts and that they said I ought to be home.
“Some young men in my house who were able to escape raised the alarm. Members of the community and the vigilante came out to confront them. But unfortunately, the gunmen killed two of our boys.
“One of the boys died on the spot, while the other died at the hospital. The case was also reported to the Divisional Police Officer and he promptly mobilise personnel to the scene of the incident.”
Meanwhile, there was no official confirmation from the either state police command or the state government.
When contacted on the telephone, the state command’s spokesman, DSP Mohammad Jalige, neither picked up his calls nor responded to the text message sent.
