The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), yesterday, disclosed that it had identified gunmen who attacked its Spokesman, Ikenga Ugochinyere, last month.
The coalition, during a media briefing presided over by its co-Spokesman, Mark Adebayo, in Abuja, released video footages of the attack in which four persons were killed, besides destruction of property worth over N1 billion.
According to Adebayo, the video showed attackers armed with guns, machetes, charms and other dangerous weapons invading the house in a commando style, and when they could not find Ugochinyere in the house, they resorted to terrorising occupants, stealing properties, planting incriminating items and destroying properties.
He further noted that Ugochinyere, who is also the House of Representatives candidate for Ideato Federal Constituency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the coming election, accused Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, and the Commissioner of Police in the state of complicity in the attack(s).
He called on the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to immediately investigate the attack to unravel the mystery behind unknown gunmen in the state.
Adebayo recalled that sometime last year, after Ugochinyere released information about grand compromise of the Nigerian voter register, in what is now called the ‘Omuma Magic,’ all hell was let loose and his life has been under threat.
“On December 23, 2022, his convoy was attacked in Ideato, his home town. In that attack, one Chinasa Nwaneri, who doubles as the Special Adviser to the governor, was identified as one who led attackers and coordinated the operation. Ikenga survived that attack by God’s grace. Petitions were written, Ikenga shouted, sadly, nothing has been done till date.”
Adebayo also called on international observers accredited to monitor the forthcoming general elections to pay special attention and deploy to Imo communities.
He, therefore, demanded that government officials, particularly governors, be restricted to their wards or where they registered to vote on election day to avoid intimidation of voters.
Adebayo said: “It is on this note that we are drawing the attention of election observers, both domestic and foreign, to take note of Ideato Federal Constituency as a flash point.”
