The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Thursday, described a First Republic aviation minister, the late Chief Mbazulike Amechi, as a man who believed in one indivisible and united Nigeria.
He said Amechi’s frankness, wisdom, honesty, courage should be emulated by all Nigerians, adding that the memories of the deceased would always cherished.
Buhari, represented by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, said this at the burial of the ex-minister in Anambra State on Thursday.
The elder statesman died on November 1, 2022.
Also speaking in his personal capacity, Ngige said the late Amechi was one of the “three wise men” who supported and encouraged him when he (Ngige) was governor of Anambra State and was confronted with federal forces.
He said, “Amechi supported me, he supported Peter Obi, and others that followed us and and when the current administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo came, he equally gave his support, but unfortunately he did not live to see to the end of this administration as he saw through our own.”
Also speaking, Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, described the late Amechi as a man who believed in the authenticity of Igbo person, adding that he demonstrated it with the names he gave his children, Tagbo, Ikenna and Ncheta, and also lived up to his name Mbazulike.
He added, “This is the end of an era, an Iroko tree fell from Ukpor, Nnewi South Anambra, Nigeria and Africa, Mbazulike will not only be remembered in Nigeria but in Africa.”
In his sermon, the Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese Most Rev. Jonas Benson Okoye, extolled the deceased for his courage and honesty.
“Amechi was a man of virtue, virtueous men do not die but transit to glory, and giving the life Mbazulike Amechi lived, those who trust in God and live faithful life will live in Him forever,” he said.
Amechi was also honoured with over one thousands local gunshots by Ukpor community and the people of Nnewi South Local Government Area.
