Spokesperson for North, Middle Belt and South Support Groups for Obi (NMBSSG4O), Alex Obiechina, yesterday, during a media briefing in Abuja, gave reasons South East governors are not in support of the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.
According to Obiechina, this is due to Obi’s disclosure of the secret, which binds state governors together when he exposed the deceit associated with security votes and pension schemes for former governors.
He stressed that Obi’s disinclination to corruption and ostentatious display alienated him from state governors, especially those of the South East, who decided not to identify with his presidential aspiration.
He remarked that despite absence of incumbent governors or heavyweight political godfathers on his campaign team, “Obi’s records in office, demonstrable fiscal prudence strategies and youth demographic support, would give him victory at the first ballot.”
Giving a brief run down of the campaign trail, Obiechina, who is also a former governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, dismissed insinuations in some quarters that insecurity could hamper voter participation in the region.
He noted that the youth and women population that were marginalised in political activities have found space in the Labour Party (LP).
He added that innovative campaign strategies and public mobilisation techniques seen around the LP presidential candidate stem from vibrancy and passion of young people.
He maintained that Obi would emerge president from the first ballot on February 25.
He said: “From my analysis and reports we are getting, it is clear that Obi will cruise home to victory.
“If you watch political trends and major determinants of who will emerge winner of the coming election, they all favour him.
“Majority of those who vote are youths and women; there are almost 80 per cent of the population at any election. The other 20 per cent is left for men, who hardly come to vote.
“And then, the fact that youths are championing Obi’s campaign, shows their determination and belief that there is urgent need for change. So, Obi’s election is pushing for a generational change, which is within the aspiration of youths. Obi meets the aspirations, hopes and wishes of most Nigerians.”
