Women professionals from Kogi Central Senatorial District, yesterday, trooped out to express their gratitude to voters who turned out en masse to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the presidential and National Assembly elections penultimate Saturday.
The women, who thanked Kogi people and Governor Yahaya Bello for the election, said the road walk became necessary to demonstrate that women in the state, generally, were solidly behind the governor for giving them the voice they had been clamouring for over the years, urging him to do more.
Led by notable professionals in Kogi Central, the women took off from Okene Local Council Secretariat, walked through the new Reference Hospital, down to Total and back to the Secretariat, chanting victory songs as they marched.
They prayed against “evil spirits” that might have been invoked by desperate politicians, saying that “darkness would never overcome light.”
Kogi State Coordinator, APC Professional Women Council, Rekiyat Onaivo, charged women to replicate their January 25 outing by coming out en masse to vote for APC candidates in the House of Assembly election on Saturday.
She said the large turnout during the last election was an indication that women in Kogi Central appreciated Bello’s women-inclusive governance.
The Chairperson, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Anne Olurinde, who also joined the walk, commended the state government for making the state’s resources work for the people, noting that the infrastructure projects undertaken by Bello’s administration were unprecedented in the history of the state.
According to her, Kogi people have been enjoying peace since the governor assumed office, adding that though journalists should be neutral, they also owed the state and the country the duty of responsible journalism devoid of unfounded panic reporting.
