Commercial and economic activities in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area, on Tuesday, in Anambra State, were halted as women in the community staged a protest over the death of a 72-year-old woman, Mrs Charity Okoli.
Mrs Charity was attacked last week at her residence in Umunze and some parts of her body were cut off by her attackers.
She was rushed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, for medical treatment.
She, however, died following injuries sustained during the attack.
The women’s leader in the community, Mrs Bridget Enekwechi, who spoke to journalists on behalf of the women, called for the proper intervention of security operatives in the community.
She also decried the level of incessant attacks in the community.
She said, “We have reviewed the activities of Abakaliki people living in Umunze and we have come to the conclusion that they must leave our community.
“They are many in our community. They impregnate our girls out of marriage; they rape our women and are involved in most of the killing you hear on Umunze. See how they butchered Madam Charity, they will leave our community for peace to reign.”
Also, the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Promise Eze, who spoke to journalists disclosed that a register has been opened for all non-indigenes living in Umunze to collate their names.
“We want to know those living within us, what they do for a living, where they live and also get the guarantee of their landlords that they are of good conduct.”
