The police in Rivers State said it had launched a full-scale investigation into the circumstances leading to the abduction and killing of the All Progressives Congress Campaign Coordinator in Ahoada-West Local Government Area of Rivers State, Chisom Lennard.
The spokesperson for the state Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
Iringe-Koko said the Commissioner of Police in charge of elections duties in the Rivers State Command, Echeng Echeng, had charged operatives to mobilise all its arsenal and necessary human assets to ensure that the killers were apprehended and prosecuted.
The PUNCH reports that Lennard was abducted by gunmen dressed in what seemed like police uniform while voting during the governorship and state House of Assembly elections at Ibagwa Polling Unit 2 Ward 10 in Ahoada West LGA on Saturday.
The APC chieftain, it was gathered, tried to stop the gunmen from snatching election materials when he was whisked away in a commando fashion by the hoodlums.
The statement read, “The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Election duties in Rivers State Command, CP Echeng Echeng, has tasked operatives of the Command to deploy all necessary human and investigative assets to ensure that the killers of the Campaign Director-General for the All Progressives Congress in Ahoada West in Rivers State, Hon. Chisom Lennard, are brought to book.
“From information gathered, the Campaign DG was shot by yet-to-be identified gunmen in the afternoon of Saturday, March 18, 2023.
“The Commissioner of Police commiserates with the family of the bereaved and has promised to bring perpetrators of such heinous crime to justice.”
Lennard’s body was riddled with bullets in a pool of his own blood along the Ibueahi-Ubeta Road in Ahoada West LGA of the state.
The late APC chieftain was an estate surveyor and former board member of the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority during the tenure of Rotimi Amaechi.
