After defeat by a greenhorn in last Saturday’s rescheduled senatorial election in Enugu East, a former Governor of Enugu State and Senator representing the district Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, has formally withdrawn his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Nnamani had lost his return bid to the Senate. He was defeat on Saturday by Labour Party (LP) candidate, Kelvin Chukwu, the younger brother to the slain LP senatorial candidate, Oyibo Chukwu, who will be representing the senatorial zone in the Senate.
Chukwu polled 69,136 against Chimaroke’s 48,701, who contested on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Although Nnamani had earlier been expelled by PDP, he remained in the contest on the strength of the suit he filed in court against the party.
He had claimed that the National Working Committee (NWC) did not have power to stop him from participating in the election, especially after his name had been submitted to INEC and final list of candidates displayed.
Besides, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi also lost in his Udenu Council to LP. The council also produced deputy governorship candidate of PDP in the election.
Nnamani expressed appreciation to his constituents for their support over the years.
Nnamani, in a statement issued, yesterday, said he has consulted with his associates and constituents and decided to quit the PDP on account of irreconcilable differences with the national leadership of the party.
He said he has moved on and hopes that his modest contributions to the development of his constituency will be the building blocks on which his successors can build on.
