Comedian and singer, Koffi Nuel, aka Koffi Tha Guru, has revealed the therapeutic effect of his jokes, adding that humour can help people cope with mental health challenges.
He told Sunday Scoop, “Doctors globally advice strongly on the need to relax and enjoy the humour that life dishes at us. I have met a couple of people who attest to the fact that watching me while on their sick beds got their spirits lifted. Comedy plays a major role as an antidepressant. It takes away pain and worry. Were it not for the skits and comedy Nigerians now enjoy all over social media, we would have had a lot more psychiatric cases all over the place.
“Mental health deterioration is on the rise in Nigeria due to the pressure of surviving these times. Good food and a relaxed atmosphere is the only solution, and comedy is doing that subtly.”
Speaking on why he featured popular singer, Obesere, in the remix of his song ‘Aroma’, Koffi said, “Aroma was my first major hit song and in honour of the journey, and to appreciate and celebrate 20 years of the success of the song, I felt the need to give it a new life, especially for our Afrobeats audience and fans, who always request for new stuff. I also wanted to create a fusion like never before, where Fuji and rap can ride side by side.”
On how he has adapted to the changes in the entertainment industry, he said, “The changes have been diverse and quite intense. Social media has also influenced it drastically. I have always been a man of the future and prepared for this eventuality. I had always created content and guarded them properly for a future exhibition on these new platforms. I adapt with the times easily.”
