Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has appealed to the authorities of University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to reverse the recent increase in tuition fees.
According to him, the reversal of the fees is in the interest of victims of Boko Haram terrorism and the parents of indigent students.
Deputy Vice Chancellor, Mohammed Mele, stated, yesterday: “The recent hike in tuition fees has continued to hit many parents and guardians,” adding that the parents had started withdrawing their children and wards from the university.
Also, the Vice Chancellor, Borno State University (BOSU), Prof. Umar Sandabe, during a Sallah homage at the Government House, Maiduguri, said: “Since UNIMAID’s recent hike in fees, I have received over 500 phone calls from the parents, guardians and some of the affected students.”
According to him, the phone calls are for him to intervene.
His words: “I am aware of the challenges facing the university. But hike in fees will not address those challenges.
“Let me interface with you to tackle the challenges. I want UNIMAID’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Aliyu Shugaba, to have a listening ear to the people of the state.”
Zulum, therefore, appreciated the two universities for coming to felicitate with him during the Sallah celebration.
He noted that UNIMAID had remained a cardinal pillar in the development of education in the North East region and the country.
Responding, Prof. Mele thanked the governor for the support he had been rendering to the university community.
