Two distinguished Nigerians, Jiti Ogunye and Co-ordinator of the African Centre for Media and Information Literacy (ACMIL), Dr. Chido Onumah, have advised that Nigeria needs restructuring for it to move forward.
They made the submission during Madiba Foundation’s fifth edition of its webinar series.
The session, which was moderated by the Foundation’s Executive Director, Frederick Adetiba, is scheduled to review the transfer of three items from the Exclusive List to the Concurrent List in relation to restructuring.
Onumah emphasised the need for a comprehensive restructuring of Nigeria’s Constitution to address fundamental challenges, including socio-economic problems that the country is grappling with.
Ogunye, on his part, said that the current Constitution was imposed on the people by the military and has all the elements of a unitary system of government, which is consistent with military rule.
Ogunye also argued that local council is not supposed to be a third-tier of the federation.
Other important topics that arose during the conversation included local council autonomy, resource control and citizenship.
In his closing remarks, Adetiba said that subsequent sessions of the webinar series would focus on those issues.
