The new Commissioner of Police (CP) in Kano State, Mohammad Gumel, has declared readiness to serve with high sense of responsibility and zeal, as well as welcome constructive criticism.
Appreciating the complexity of the state’s security architecture, Gumel said he considered his deployment to the state as an asset in principle rather than a challenge.
Gumel, who officially assumed duty as Kano CP, spoke, yesterday, while addressing senior police officers at the Police Officers’ Mess, Bompai, Kano. Prior to his full posting, Gumel was redeployed from Sokoto State to Kano to supervise the recent supplementary elections across 16 local councils of the state. He promised to ensure adequate and steady welfare package for officers and men of the command, but urged them to exhibit professionalism in policing the state.
The new police boss canvassed the people’s support, pointing out: “The police force cannot address crime and the root of emerging crimes in isolation, without the active support and collaboration of the people.”
“I am aware that the good people of Kano are known for being politically aware and active. Therefore, it is to my knowledge that whatever the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) does in this state will always be in the limelight and will attract public attention.
“This, instead of being a challenge, is, to me, an asset in principle. Please, take my words that under my watch, the police in the state shall welcome constructive criticism, will be ready to accept the responsibility of addressing all the real and emerging challenges and work with the communities in providing the needed remedies to all the shortcomings that would keep coming.”
According to him, the command’s policing activities shall be collective searching, as it shall continually work through the communities to keep the state safe.
His words: “On my part, I will be committed to addressing these issues with high standards of performance for which the Nigeria police is nationally and internationally known.
“I have learnt, over the years, that it is desirable for all police officers to always exhibit professionalism in the discharge of their duties. It makes the police institution more respected and their actions acceptable to the community.”
Gumel promised to work with sister security agencies in the state. “My vision is to lead the police command transparently and to build it on community partnership with robust intelligence gathering, using the right technology, and to run a people-friendly police with respect to fundamental human rights and freedoms.”
