Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), yesterday, advised the three new governors in the South East not to disappoint the people, who voted them into office.
The governors are: Peter Mbah of Enugu, Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi and Alex Otti of Abia. National President of the group, Okwu Nnabuike, in a statement, said it was time for the governors to face governance.
Okwu noted that the journey to victory for the three governors was not an easy one, stressing that they must justify the confidence reposed in them.
He said: “We want to congratulate the three new governors in the South East. It is the will of God that the mantle of leadership will be on them at this historic moment. In Enugu, against all odds, Peter Mbah emerged the governor of the state, because residents were determined to give him their mandate having assessed his personal capacity.
“It is now time to pay them back, and Mbah should avoid any form of distraction. He should remodel Enugu capital quickly with the needed infrastructure, and then head to the hinterlands.”
Turning to the governor of Ebonyi State, Okwu said he should focus his energy on rural development. He noted that the immediate past governor, Dave Umahi, did so much in development of Abakaliki, the state capital. He advised Nwifuru to now focus on rural areas.
He said: “Many communities in Ebonyi have not experienced serious government presence. Umahi has done well in the state capital; so, we expect Nwifuru to channel his energy into providing basic infrastructure in rural areas.”
On the part of Otti, the leader of the youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation said he must not engage in unnecessary political vendetta, urging him to face governance.
Okwu said: “The expectation on Otti is high; he must not disappoint the people who defied all odds to elect him.
“Having said this, we want to add that South East governors should unite, irrespective of party affiliations, for the development of our region.”
Okwu then called on opposition parties in the three states to sheath their swords and support the governors to avoid distractions that might hinder rapid development.
