A 57-year-old married woman, Jamiu Sikirat, was, yesterday, confirmed dead in Adeta Area of Ilorin when she fell inside the well, while fetching water at the dusk of the day.
The Guardian learnt that the incident took place at Ile- Onikoko Adeta, Ilorin West Local Council of Kwara State.
Head of Department, Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, who confirmed the incident, said Sikirat who hailed from Ile-Agunko compound in the same neighbourhood, went to fetch water at the domestic well and accidentally fell into it at about 6:42p.m.
He said: “The fire brigade was summoned through a telephone call by one Mr. Muhammad Jamiu living in that neighbourhood.
“However, firemen were able to recover the dead body from the well and later handed it over to one Alfa Abdulganiyu Akuko, a family member of the deceased, in the presence of police officers from Adewole Division, Ilorin.
“According to the report, the victim, woman, went to fetch water at the well and during the process, one of her legs suddenly slipped off the ground and she unfortunately fell into the well.”
The Guardian gathered that the well, dug on a marshy area, was expectedly soaked with water due to heavy downpour a few minutes before the tragic incident.
Traditionalists said when a well is filled up with sand, it should never be used again for human consumption, hence the remains of the deceased should be buried by the side of the well.
But it was not certain whether such would be observed as the woman professed Islamic faith until her death.
