Gunmen, on Monday, invaded the Ugba community in the Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, shot a member of the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards dead, and abducted two persons in the community.
A source from Ugba town told journalists on Monday that the gunmen invaded the community around 3pm, adding that the gunmen drove in a car and robbed customers of their valuables including mobile phones, cash and two cars.
“An officer of the Benue State Volunteer Guards in the Ugba community was shot, also an educationist in the town and a woman were kidnapped. One of the State Volunteer Guards was shot at a checkpoint they mounted to stop the gunmen from escaping,” the source said.
The source added that the injured operative was taken to the general hospital where he had been receiving treatment.
The Public Relations Officer of the State Community Volunteer Guards, Ahokegh Terkimbi, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent, said one person died during the attack on the Ugba community.
“My commander just confirmed that one of our personnel died in the incident,” Terkimbi said in a terse response.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, also confirmed the attack.
In a text message to our correspondent, she wrote, “The DPO confirmed being in pursuit of some armed men at the moment.”
PUNCH Metro had reported that last Friday, gunmen invaded the Tswarev/ Ukemberakya Council ward in the same local government area and killed a guard of the State Volunteer Community Guards and injured two others.
