President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday, met behind closed doors with the immediate past National Chairman and Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Senators Abdullahi Adamu and Iyiola Omisore, respectively, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Adamu and Omisore reportedly resigned their positions last week, ahead of scheduled national caucus and National Executive Council, NEC, meetings slated for Monday, July 18 and Tuesday 19, respectively.
The meetings were postponed after the duo were said to have tendered their resignation letter.
President Tinubu is granted a lot of leverage and influence within the ranks of the APC and is expected to determine a lot about the emergence of new party leaders.
Though nothing could be officially confirmed about the reason for the visit, it is believed that it must have been part of efforts to sort out issues surrounding the party’s leadership.
When rumours about the resignation of the duo emerged, the former Chairman, Adamu, had been reported as saying he was not going to make any comments on the development until President Tinubu, who was away in Nairobi, Kenya, returned to the country.
Although neither Adamu nor Omisore has openly announced their said resignation since it became news, the Acting National Chairman, who was Deputy National Chairman (North), Abubakar Kyari, while speaking to journalists after a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja, said both leaders had resigned.
He said: “The NWC wishes to inform you of the resignation of the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and that of the National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore and with this development, and according to the constitution of the All Progressives Congress (APC), it is now incumbent on my humble self, Senator Abubakar Kyari, as a Deputy National Chairman, North, to assume the office of the acting National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“And subsequently, also, the Deputy National Secretary, Festus Fuantar, will now assume the office of the acting National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“And with this recent development in the change of leadership, I will like to inform everybody here that the proposed National Caucus meeting slated for Tuesday, the 18th of July 2023, and the National Executive Committee meetings of the All Progressives Congress (APC) slated for Wednesday, 19th of July 2023 are hereby been postponed.
“And this postponement will not be indefinite but a new date will be communicated in the near future.” in the near future.”
