The Lagos State Government has advised its residents on the appropriate use of toilets.
A statement by the government added that residents should become ambassadors of positive change towards making the ‘Year 2025 Open Defecation-free’ target achievable.
Speaking during the ‘Use the toilet’ campaign in Surulere, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Mr Gaji Tajudeen, noted that the plan towards a clean Nigeria starts with each resident making a personal commitment to embracing change.
Tajudeen who was represented by a director in the sanitation department, Mrs Omoyeni Balogun, said the 2025 target of a clean Nigeria could be achieved by promoting the construction and use of toilets in individual homes and public places.
He added that the lack of proper sanitation and the practice of open defecation had been a significant challenge in the country.
It read, “It is disheartening to know that some citizens lack access to basic sanitation services, and these lead to severe consequences for public health, the environment, and overall socio-economic development.
He explained that access to proper sanitation facilities was a fundamental human right, stressing that the government would ensure that every individual had access to clean and safe sanitation facilities
In his welcome address, the Chairman, Surulere Local Government, Mr Suleiman Bamidele
said that the act of open defecation must be stopped due to its significant health challenges including diarrhea, and cholera among others that could result in eventual death.
He advised members of his community to collaborate with the Lagos State Government and be ambassadors against open defecation.
