An artisan, AbdulFatai Abdullateef, 29, and Adesina Opeyemi, 31, were on Wednesday paraded before journalists by the Osun State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Sunday Agboola, for conspiracy and energy theft.
Agboola said the suspects were arrested at Oke Baale, Osogbo on Monday during a joint raid by the NSCDC and the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company officials.
He said, “The suspects, AbdulFatai Abdullateef and Adesina Opeyemi, bypassed the electricity meter to power their pumping machine at no cost.
“They were arrested at Akede area, Oke Baale, Osogbo on Monday, August 21, 2023, at about 7pm during a joint operation by the NSCDC and officials of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.
“The duo volunteered confessional statements, admitting their culpability. The suspects will be charged to court after investigations have been concluded.”
During an interview with PUNCH Metro, one of the suspects, Abdullateef, a plumber, said they were caught about 24 hours after the illegal connection was done.
“We bypassed the electricity meter to pump water. The money we have been spending on electricity tokens was too much to bear for me. That was why we thought we should bypass it to save cost. We bypassed it on Sunday and we were caught on Monday,” he said.
