A fashion brand, Ashluxe, has paid tributes to the late afrobeat creator and icon, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, with its Kalakuta Republic collection, which was showcased recently.
The fashion event, which held in Lagos, was a pot-pourri of glamour, sophisticated artistry, and musical brilliance, all geared towards celebrating culture and creativity.
One of the highlights of the evening was the unveiling of the Kalakuta Republic collection, which pays homage to Fela’s indomitable spirit, and the legacy of his Kalakuta Republic.
According to a statement sent to Society Plus, the collection embodies the vibrancy of afrobeat, merging cultural elements with avant-garde fashion, echoing Fela’s fervor for African unity, and resistance against oppression.
The statement read in part, “Partnering officially with Fela’s estate marks a momentous stride for Ashluxe, becoming the first African fashion brand licensed to showcase Fela’s images. This collaboration symbolises more than mere fashion; it signifies a shared commitment to perpetuating Fela’s powerful messages of freedom and self-expression across borders.”
On his part, the founder of Ashluxe, Yinka Ash, expressed his huge respect for Fela’s legacy, saying, “We strive to emulate Fela’s ideals through fashion, advocating African pride, unity and creativity as instruments of change.
“The new collection embodies Fela’s spirit, delivering a vibrant tapestry of culture and style. Drawing inspiration from the life and times of the legendary musician, it features brand’s signature blend of colourful prints and avant-garde silhouettes.”
Meanwhile, the fashion show witnessed a fusion of artistry and entertainment, featuring a dazzling display of the brand’s innovative designs, alongside an electrifying performance by Fela’s grandson, Made.
One of the notable guests at the event was the founder of the Lagos Fashion Week, Omoyemi Akerele.
