Amid the challenges facing the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State, a former House of Assembly aspirant, Dee Ilugbekhai, has called for unity among party faithful ahead of the September 21 governorship election.
The Edo PDP is currently embroiled in an internal crisis, with the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, contesting the governorship primary won by a former Chairman of Sterling Bank, Asue Ighodalo, who is an ally of Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The state House of Assembly is also currently in moves to impeach Shaibu, a development believed to be connected with the face-off between Shaibu and Obaseki.
In a statement on Monday, Ilugbekhai appealed for unity in the PDP in the overall interest of the party, particularly as the governorship election is a few months away.
He said, “While internal challenges may arise, our strength as a party lies in our unity. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we rally together, transcending individual ambitions for the collective success of our party.
“As we navigate the path towards the Edo 2024 governorship election, let us remember that our unity is our greatest asset. Together, we can overcome any challenge and emerge victorious, ensuring a brighter future for Edo State under the banner of the PDP.”
