A yet-to-be-identified person was on Friday shot dead near UNIZIK Junction, Awka, Anambra State, by members of a suspected rival cult group.
The suspected cultists were said to have accosted the victim in a yellow tricycle, before gunning him down.
PUNCH Online notes that the incessant killings in Awka have been attributed to rivalry and supremacy battles among cult groups.
The Friday incident brought to over 12, the number of killings that occurred as a result of suspected cult clashes, a development that started on Easter Sunday.
A source in the area who witnessed the Friday killing but did not want to be named for security reasons said, “The man is a manager of Anambra Executive Transport Company. He was shot three times, and when the gunmen were sure he had died, they entered their tricycle and drove away.”
When contacted, the state police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said he was not aware of the killing.
He said many family members of victims of cult-related killings do not report to the police for investigation but prefer to bury their deceased relatives.
Due to the incessant killings, some residents have called for the installation of CCTV cameras at strategic places in Awka,
As a result of the development, PUNCH Online observed most streets were locking their gates in the afternoon and pasted, “no entry for tricycles.”
