The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC), on Tuesday, announced October 19 as the date for the conduct of the election into 21 Local Government Area of the state.
The development might not be unconnected with recent financial autonomy granted 774 Local Government Councils in Nigeria by the Supreme Court.
The KOSIEC Chairman, Mamman Nda Eri, while addressing stakeholders at the presentation of notice of election and time table in Lokoja, said the state Independent Electoral Commission having empowered by the Local Government Election Law 2004 and the Electoral act 2010, is poised to conduct a transparent, fair and credible election in the state.
Eri however declared that the form for Local Government chairmanship election will cost 250,000 naira while for Councellorship position cost 100,000 naira respectively.
According to the time table and schedule of activities as presented by the KOSIEC Chairman, collection of forms will commence from 5th to 12th of August while last day for the submission of forms is 26th August.
Political parties, according to schedule, are expected to conduct primary election to nominate candidates from 13th to 23rd of August while political campaign commenced from 12th of September to 17th of October 2024.
“In accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), and the power vested in the State Independent Electoral Commission, I hereby formally present the time table and schedule of activities for conduct of the 2024 Local Government Elections in Kogi State, which is scheduled for 19th of October, 2024 by the grace of God,” the state Electoral boss thereby declared.
