The Initiative For Better And Brighter Nigeria (IBBN), Plateau State joined the nationwide protests against hunger and suffering on Thursday, defying the state government’s rejection of the demonstration.
Led by Convener Prophet Isa El Buba, the protesters marched peacefully from the Secretariat junction to the old airport roundabout, carrying Nigerian flags and placards with inscriptions such as “There is hunger in the land”, “Bring back fuel subsidy”, and “Reverse electricity tariff” “Enough is Enough”.
The protesters demanded the reversal of the removal of fuel subsidy, the reversal of the high electricity tariff, and the reduction of the high cost of living. Despite the government’s rejection, the protesters were determined to make their voices heard.
Security operatives were present to guide the protesters and ensure that the protest remained peaceful.
It would be recalled that the Plateau State government had earlier rejected the protest, citing security concerns, but the protesters were undeterred.
Other protesters also assembled at the British American roundabout in Jos, where most shops were closed in solidarity with the protest. The peaceful nature of the protest was a relief to many who had feared that the protest might turn violent.
The protests in Plateau state were part of a nationwide demonstration against the harsh economic conditions and anti-people policies of the government. The protesters vowed to continue their agitation until their demands were met.
In a related development, New Telegraph reported that most streets and business areas were closed down, especially at the popular terminus and Ahmadu Bello Way in Jos.
Security agencies were also positioned at strategic locations around Jos to maintain peace and order.
