No fewer than three unidentified passengers have lost their lives following a multi-vehicle collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The accident occurred on Thursday on the Kara section of the road around 7 p.m. near Isheri-Olofin, when an unidentified truck driver transporting sugar lost control and collided with another vehicle, setting off a chain reaction involving multiple vehicles.
Among the vehicles involved were an SF3000 truck, a Toyota Camry with the number plate EPE 200 GK, an Isuzu mini truck with the number plate T-1079 LA, and a Honda Accord.
A fuel attendant at a nearby filling station, identified as Michael, recounted seeing several injured passengers being rushed to the hospital.
“Three vehicles were involved, including one fully loaded with bags of sugar. I heard that some people lost their lives. Several injured passengers were taken to the hospital, and the truck driver fled before he could be apprehended,” Michael said.
While confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, stated that three passengers, including two women and one man, died at the scene, while the injured were taken to an emergency clinic at Old Toll Gate in Ojota for treatment.
“The Lagos State Fire Service also responded to the scene to extinguish a fire caused by the crash.
“The bodies have been transported to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital mortuary for identification and autopsy. Efforts are underway to locate the truck driver who fled the scene,” Odutola added.
Amodu Shakiru, spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire Service, noted that although the incident occurred in Ogun State, their team was on-site to assist in managing the situation. “The crash took place along the Kara Bridge,” he said.
