The Chairman of the micro blogging site, X, formerly known as Twitter, Elon Musk has said the social media platform will shut down its local operations in Brazil following a prolonged legal conflict with Brazilian Supreme Court Judge, Alexandre de Moraes.
According the tech expert, despite the closure, X will remain accessible to Brazilian users.
The dispute centers around de Moraes’s efforts to combat disinformation, which has led to legal challenges against X.
The platform’s Global Government Affairs department accused de Moraes of threatening their legal representative with arrest if X did not comply with censorship orders.
The department stated that the office closure was necessary to ensure staff safety and blamed de Moraes for the situation.
Brazilian Secretary of Digital Policies Joao Brant criticized X’s decision, warning that it could lead to a potential blocking of the platform in Brazil.
De Moraes, who has been active in combating misinformation, previously ordered the suspension of several accounts linked to false information about the 2022 presidential election.
Musk argued that complying with de Moraes’s demands would compromise X’s principles.
He stated that while the closure would impact revenue, “principles matter more than profit.”
