President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his team are currently worried about the cases of insecurity in the country and the effects of the current increase in pump price of Premium Motor Spirit and the hardship it is generating.
Sources said that the Federal Government believed that the increment was not communicated well, thereby triggering anger from Nigerians.
The President of late, has come under intense pressure from members of his inner cycles to do something about the mounting security challenge even as they consider former Rivers State governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike more of a liability than an asset.
Sources close to the Presidency confided in the Sunday Telegraph that the president was in a dilemma of sorts.
The Source said: “There is pressure on the President to rejig his cabinet and bring in people other than the Lagos crowd and technocrats other than politicians.
“Also, he is being charged with finding a solution to the mounting challenge of insecurity, especially the recent massacre in Yobe and residents of Gobir, Sokoto State including the Emir, who was said to have died of a heart attack, following the trauma he was subjected to in the hands of bandits who abducted him, his son and a number of his subjects.
“Some inner members of his government are of the view that he should go the former President Goodluck Jonathan’s way. That is the call for help from friends of Nigeria.”
Sunday Telegraph gathered that President Tinubu is weighing his options on security in the North East and North West regions.
“The belief in the military is that there is an attempt to overwhelm the government with the recent upsurge in the attack of security personnel.
“Towards this end, the president is also looking at reaching out to allies to lend a hand in supporting the military in fighting the insurgents..
“The military complained that the former NIA did little or nothing in terms of liaising with the international community to gather intelligence.
“So the president is weighing his options. It is on the table,” the source added.
But last week, a senior member of the presidency disclosed that the president has achieved much in the area of security silently. He said the directive by the President to the Defence Chiefs to move to the North-West to flush out bandits was one of the few operations to be made public.
“Most of our operations are covert. Our achievements would not be made public until we achieve a measure of stability. Otherwise, so much has been achieved in the war against insecurity. But we don’t want to be loud on them. What the previous administration could not achieve in eight years, we have done in just over a year. We are not there yet but be assured that President Tinubu knows what he wants. He is not making noise about his accomplishments.”
The president is equally worried about the backlashes from different sectors of the country over the recent PMS pump price increase. The president and his men have at various for a, appealed to Nigerians for understanding.
There are also political miscalculations as it is believed that some of his political allies were also not helping him.
For instance, the former Governor of Rivers and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory( FCT), Nyesom Wike is believed to have become a problem for the presidency.
A source said: “The statements Wike is making are at variance with what somebody should be saying at that level.
“There is also pressure on him as some people are telling him that Wike is more of a political liability than an asset and we understand that the president is also weighing his options in that regard,” a source close to the Presidency volunteered to Sunday Telegraph.
“Even though it is more political now, some are asking if the president is ready to stake his credibility because of one man even though the man helped him. He is becoming more of a liability than an asset,” the Source added.
Furthermore, the Source said: “One of the problems besetting the President is what they called the Wike dilemma. Some of his inner cycles are telling him that it is time for Wike to leave, so that he can face his politics; so that governance takes place by not dragging his government into needless politics and his intransigence is not helping matters at all.
Another source said: “There is a push for the President to rejig his cabinet as some of the members have not lived up to expectations, especially the economic team. They are yet to live up to expectations in terms of the deliverables, yet to be seen.
“Just as he did with the NIA and the DSS, he should go the whole hog of doing away with the economic team too.”
