Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi, has denied saying he would accept to run as vice presidential candidate, if possible. Obi was quoted, during a recent television interview, of accepting to be a vice presidential candidate if he sees anybody who shares the same vision. But in a message on his X platform on yesterday, the former Anambra State governor said he was misquoted. He explained that he told his interviewers that he would not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians were suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges. According to him: “When I was asked about collaboration, I explicitly stated my openness to working with others, provided their intentions were not centred on state capture. “I emphasized my commitment to partnering with those who share my vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress. “I also made it clear that I remain committed to the Labour Party, and if anyone wishes to negotiate or join forces, they must disclose their true intentions.” his government’s outrageous actions violating human rights and civil liberties undermine democracy and threaten national stability. “The administration’s tactics, including the harassment and arrest of dissenters, are contributing to a climate of fear and repression.
“The misuse of terrorism charges against peaceful activists, and the judiciary’s complicity in these actions raises alarms about the rule of law and the protection of citizens’ rights in Nigeria. Tinubu’s government has trampled upon and eroded rather than upheld democratic values, failed to ensure freedom of expression and address public grievances effectively. “For the umpteenth time, RULAAC calls on President Tinubu to respect and protect democratic principles, engage with citizens, and combat the challenges of hardship and insecurity as these are crucial for fostering a more inclusive and just society. The government must halt further clampdown and abuse of power, including the reported plan to arrest Omoyele Sowore and prioritize human rights.” Obi maintained that he was not desperate to become president but is determined to see Nigeria work. “Likewise, I am not desperate for any position at all as I believe I can make contributions as I am already doing without occupying any office. “For the avoidance of doubts, I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone and it’s unequivocal. “I have consistently maintained that I am open to working with those committed to building a new Nigeria,” he said.
The former presidential candidate stated that when 2027 election comes, if he decides to run for any office, it would not be with those whose sole aim is state capture or merely winning an election. “I want them to explain how we will ensure that no child is left behind and how we will bring millions of outof-school children back into classrooms, ensure healthy living and pull people out of poverty. “My statement was unequivocal and I am genuinely surprised by the misrepresentation of my words,” he added. Obi maintained that his commitment to Nigeria was steadfast, and believes one could possible contribute to its progress without occupying any office.
