Tragedy struck in Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Saturday as a boat carrying 53 farmers capsized on a local river, leaving 41 feared dead.
New Telegraph gathered that the accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday while the farmers were en route to their farms.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that only 12 passengers, including the boat captain, were rescued.
Confirming the tragic incident, the Sole Administrator of Gummi Local Government, Alhaji Na’Allah Musa, attributed the accident to overloading, as passengers reportedly ignored warnings to disembark.
Rescue efforts are ongoing to recover the missing passengers.
