The Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas Limited (NLNG Ltd) and eminent scientists have said the new invention termed: ‘PIC-FUEL’ will address carbon emission and save Nigeria about $500 million annually in foreign exchange.
They stated that the technology assesses how carbon that is emitted would be captured, processed and turned into other products that will be utilized for the benefit of society.
The respondents in a separate interview with New Telegraph stated that it has the capacity of providing Nigeria with cleaner and cheaper diesel if adopted and commercialized.
The respondents are NLNG’s General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Mr. Andy Odeh; Manager, Corporate Communication and Public Affairs, NLNG Ltd, Anne Marie-Palmer-Ikuku; Professor of Physics, Department of Physics & Astronomy, Faculty of Physical Sciences, University of Nigeria, (UNN) Nsukka, Prof. Francisca Nneka Okeke and Dean, Faculty of Environmental Design and Management, Lead City University, Ibadan, Prof. Grace Oloukoi.
Odeh said the invention is big, especially around carbon emission as there is a global transition to the Netzero age.
The technology was developed by Eni Oko, Olajide Otittooju and Meihong Wang in their work: “Process Intensification Technology for Greenhouse Emission Control in Power Generation and Industry for Sustainable Fuel Production (PIC-FUEL).
The entry which won the 2024 Nigeria Science Prize, works by capturing CO2 emissions directly from industrial sources such as power plants, cement factories, and refineries. The emissions are passed through a unit called the Rotating Packed Bed (RPB), where CO2 is absorbed using a solvent and the absorbed CO2 is then converted into methanol through a reaction with hydrogen in an electrolyser machine. The methanol can then be directly blended with diesel or sold as a product.
Odeh stated that the innovation presented a golden opportunity as it looks at how carbon that is emitted will be captured, processed and turned into other products that will be utilized for the benefit of society.
He said rather than staying in the air or finding places where it will be harmful to people, there is now an opportunity through this invention or piece of work to capture, store and convert to usable energy instead of wasting it or venting it.
He explained that the Prize of Science, instituted by NLNG, has a role in identifying innovative works that can solve societal problems.
He opined that that objective has been achieved by the selection of the winning entry.
Odeh said: “Our role is to identify works that solve problems. That objective has been achieved. The next stage is advocacy and publicity around the piece of work. That is where countries and companies have the opportunity to connect to the work, identify opportunities to scale it to the point where it is commercially beneficial to businesses and viable to be used by businesses and countries.”
Marie-Palmer-Ikuku claimed that the Nigeria Prize for Science has continued to live up to its design of stimulating the advancement and application of science and technology in order to help address issues that are vital to the development of Nigeria and the improvement in the standards of living of the populace.
She said that the winning work: “Process Intensification Technology for Greenhouse Emission Control in Power Generation and Industry for Sustainable Fuel Production (PIC-FUEL) has the potential to impact the world positively.
She said: “Eni Oko is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Chemical Engineering at Newcastle University, U.K., while Olajide Otitoju is a Research Associate at the University of Sheffield, U.K. Meihong Wang, is a Professor of Process and Energy Systems Engineering, specialising in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) at the University of Sheffield, UK. Professor Wang is winning the Prize for the second time after his 2019 win with Dr Mathew Aneke with their work on Carbon Capture, Carbon Utilization, Biomass Gasification and Energy Storage for Power Generation.”
Okeke, the Chairman of the panel that judged the entry as the most outstanding said it will address climate change challenges. According to her, climate mitigation is the solution.
She said: “Climate mitigation is what will solve our problem. That is the essence of calling this so if you have technology, that will reduce the effects of climate change on lives on Earth. That is what these people did.
“Mostly, we said that reducing climate change is reducing the carbon emitted into the atmosphere and capturing it. This is what this winning entry has done and it should be very effective in Nigeria. They have even shown us what it has done and it is still going to be done in Nigeria using their results.
“Most times, we have wonderful results from our research as scientists, but implementation has always eluded us. That is where my fear is.”
Oloukoi, who is a member of the panel, explained that PIC-FUEL is about capturing carbon, storing it and trying to reduce it to produce methanol and also to get cleaner diesel which in a way, that will help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide being contributing to the greenhouse gas emission in Nigeria.
She stated that the technology if adopted, would help Nigeria have an active participation in zero emission, which is a global agenda to climate change and its impacts.
Oloukoi said: “When we adopt this technology, it is adopted in some other part of the world, Norway, UK and even France. Adopting and upscaling it in Nigeria will therefore help us in terms of job creation, and production of clean energy and more importantly, it will reduce the amount of investments that we are having in the forex expenditure because definitely the money we have been taking outside will now be here and that will help us to stabilize the economy.
“This year’s project is all about reducing the impact of climate change and at the same time, creating opportunities for a cleaner environment and better life for Nigerians.”
