The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed its participation in the forthcoming Local Government elections for chairmanship and councillorship positions in Abia State scheduled for November 2.
Allwell Asiforo Okere, Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Abia made this announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the party’s Secretariat in Umuahia on Friday.
Okere emphasized that the PDP remains a formidable political force in the state, describing the party as the “beautiful bride” of the Abia populace.
He encouraged party members interested in contesting for local government positions to visit the party’s secretariat to obtain nomination and expression of interest forms.
According to a source at the PDP Secretariat, the nomination form for the chairmanship position will be sold at ₦200,000, while those vying for councillorship positions will pay ₦25,000.
In a bid to encourage female participation, the party is offering a 50% discount on the fees for female aspirants.
The decision comes after the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) unveiled the timetable for the elections last week.
ABSIEC Chairman, Professor George Chioma, assured the public that the November 2 polls would be conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner, without any bias toward any candidate or political party.
The upcoming elections are seen as a crucial test of the PDP’s influence in Abia politics, with the party aiming to retain its stronghold in the state.
