The University of Ibadan (UI) was on Friday submerged with a devastating flood wreaking havoc on the institution.
The Awolowo Hall of Residence was hit the hardest, with 16 underground rooms completely submerged.
Students’ properties, including books, food, and important documents, floated in the floodwaters, causing destruction estimated to be worth millions of naira.
These damages have affected students preparing for exams severely, losing study materials, personal belongings, and food.
One student while describing the scene said, “The flood took over students’ rooms, toilets, kitchens, and all entrances to the hostel.”
Another student reported that their friend’s room was destroyed, along with everything in her cupboard.
The university authorities have yet to release an official statement, but the incident raises concerns about the institution’s safety during this season.
Students are calling for urgent intervention to prevent further damage and restore lost property.
With the impact threatening to worsen, students and staff scramble to salvage what remains.
