Amid calls for its abolishment, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has advocated for reforms to strengthen the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), rather than scrapped it.
Governor Fintiri who spoke on Saturday emphasized that despite questions surrounding the commission’s legality, now is not the time to scrap it.
“For me, it is not the right time to abolish the EFCC, whether it was established rightly or wrongly,” he stated.
The governor suggested removing politics from the EFCC to prevent claims of witch-hunting.
“We need to make it work better,” he added.
Fintiri criticized the Federal Government’s practice of retaining funds seized from state embezzlement cases, labeling it “a wrong practice.”
He argued that funds should be allocated to all levels of government, ensuring transparency and accountability.
Fintiri’s remarks come as 16 governors have filed a lawsuit challenging EFCC’s legality, although he has not joined the suit.
The governor plans to review the case with his Attorney General before making a decision.
By advocating for reforms, Fintiri seeks to strengthen the EFCC’s effectiveness in combating financial crimes while promoting transparency and accountability.
