Following the lingering crisis in the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman also f the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed has called on the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, to restore the status quo.
Governor Mohammed’s call follows rising tension within the party, stemming from Damagum’s leadership following the court-ordered removal of former Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu.
Insiders disclosed that the PDP Governors Forum has called for an emergency meeting on Monday to address the party’s future amid ongoing leadership struggles.
A senior party member, speaking anonymously, hinted that key stakeholders are contemplating the formation of a caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs and plan for a National Convention in 2025 to elect a new National Working Committee (NWC).
Mohammed expressed concern over the ongoing feud, especially following recent actions by Damagum’s faction of the NWC, which suspended National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade for alleged insubordination.
In retaliation, Ologunagba’s faction announced the suspension of Damagum and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, appointing National Treasurer Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the acting National Chairman.
Mohammed has called for unity within the party, urging Damagum’s camp to allow the National Executive Committee (NEC) to resolve these issues at its next meeting.
The upcoming emergency meeting of the PDP Governors Forum will address the possibility of appointing a caretaker committee, aiming to restore stability within the party ahead of the proposed 2025 convention.
Party insiders believe that reconciliation within the current NWC may be impossible, with litigation and ongoing factional disputes hindering efforts to unify the PDP.
