The Federal Government through the Ministry of Education is set to roll out a new basic school curriculum in January 2025.
The Education Minister, Prof. Tahir Mamman who made this known said the curriculum is aimed at equipping students with practical skills and boosting employability.
The overhaul will affect all public and private primary schools nationwide.
Also, the new curriculum will teach students at least two essential skills to prepare them for a productive life post-graduation.
Mamman stated the curriculum overhaul aligns with the government’s National Skills Framework.
Additionally, it incorporates STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and digital literacy to meet global standards.
To ensure smooth implementation, the government has dedicated upcoming months to teacher training, classroom preparation, and national stakeholder engagement, particularly with private schools.
An updated secondary school curriculum is also expected by September 2025, aligning with the basic level’s skill-acquisition emphasis.
This new curriculum addresses concerns about students graduating without practical skills or employable qualities.
By providing students with competitive skills, Nigeria aims to enhance education quality, improve job prospects, and contribute to socioeconomic development.
The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) has been working on this initiative for 12 years, marking a significant leap forward for Nigeria’s educational system.
