The death toll from the tragic petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Local Government Area of Jigawa State has risen to 153, with over 100 individuals hospitalized.
New Telegraph had earlier reported 105 fatalities with 70 injured, but the situation worsened, according to the latest statement from the Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, who confirmed the increased number of victims.
The explosion occurred when residents gathered to scoop spilt petrol from an overturned tanker near Khadija University, Majiya, leading to a catastrophic inferno.
No fewer than 94 people died instantly at the scene, and more succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total to 153.
Meanwhile, survivours are receiving treatment at multiple hospitals across the state, including Aminu Kano, Jahun, Nguru, Hadejia, and Gumel hospitals.
Governor Mallam Umar Namadi expressed deep sorrow, joining the community in mourning the victims.
A mass burial was conducted for 140 deceased individuals on Wednesday during which the Governor assured that the state government would cover all medical expenses for the injured.
Governor Namadi also emphasized the need for increased public awareness regarding safety measures during emergencies to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Meanwhile, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) reported that 57 individuals remain hospitalized with varying degrees of burns.
In response, the Federal Government has ordered a full investigation into the incident.
Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), has also expressed condolences to the affected families.
He further emphasizing the importance of enforcing safety regulations in the transportation of petroleum products.
President Bola Tinubu has also directed a review of fuel transportation safety protocols nationwide, while Vice President Kashim Shettima extended his sympathies, assuring federal support for the victims.
Additionally, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been deployed to the site.
First responders and medical personnel have been commended for their swift actions amid the unfolding tragedy.
