A driver of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) identified as Andrew Ominikoron, on trial for the alleged rape and murder of 22-year-old fashion designer Oluwabamise Ayanwole, began his defence on Thursday at the Lagos State High Court in Tafawa Balewa Square.
Ominikoron, who pleaded not guilty to charges of rape, conspiracy, felony, sexual assault, and murder, testified before Justice Sherifat Sonaike.
During his testimony, Ominikoron denied raping or killing Ayanwole.
He explained that on February 26, 2022, he illegally picked up passengers after his official shift, a practice known as “Korokpe.”
He stated that he picked up Ayanwole at Chevron and three male passengers at Agungi, one of whom later brandished a gun, ordering him to cooperate.
The defendant narrated that the male passengers allegedly raped Ayanwole, and he was powerless to intervene due to the gun threat.
After the incident, Ominikoron claimed he fled in fear after learning that a passenger was reported missing.
The prosecution alleges that Ominikoron forcibly raped and murdered Ayanwole, violating Sections 411, 223, 260, and 165 of the Lagos State Criminal Law.
The case continues on October 21, 2024, for further examination of the defendant.
