The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has described as disturbing, the boast by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Abdullahi Ganduje, that the party is set to ‘capture’ Ondo State as a gateway to capture Oyo and Osun States.
PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, at an interaction with journalists in Abuja on Monday, said the statement was a confirmation of the party’s warning that Nigeria is moving towards totalitarianism and a one-party state.
Ologunagba described the statement as a threat to democracy, recalling that such a reckless statement was what ended Nigeria’s second republic.
“It is unfortunate; it looks like history is repeating itself,” he said, noting that the rigging of the 1983 Oyo State governorship election when the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN) attempted to impose Akin Omoboriowo on the people, triggered the crisis that ended the second republic.
“So, we warning the APC; this is a warning directly to Ganduje. He should be careful about South West because he could be declared a ‘personal non grata’ in the South West for this recklessness.
“The APC should know, and I’m sure some of the leaders of APC recognise that and they should stay away from Ondo State.
“The election of November 16 in Ondo State is a different ball game entirely. The people of Ondo State are ready, they are set to vote for the PDP, and any attempt, having regard to the history of the Ondo people, you can’t cow them, and you cannot suppress them from whatever they believe in.
“So recognising that, the APC should watch it, and they should know that, we do not take threats and the idea of capture.
“We have never been captured; we are not prisoners. If Gandje was captured, which I think from the history they were, he can reflect that in his own area, but not in South West,” Ologunagba warned.
The PDP spokesperson, however, stated that the people of South West have a very rich history, strong-willed, politically educated and know what they want.
