The burial committee for the interment of Abia State Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu’s first executive governor has announced the programme for his final transition.
The committee in a statement by former President of the Senate Anyim Pius Anyim and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, said Onu will be buried in his country home Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government of Ebonyi State on November 8, after a Requiem Mass.
According to the programme of activities, a night of tributes will be held in his honour at the Musa Yar’ Adua Centre, Abuja on November 4 by 5pm, to be followed with a Requiem Mass at Church of Assumption, Asokoro, also in Abuja the next day.
His remains will be taken to the Abia State executive chambers on November 6 where it will lie in state, and later to International Conference Centre Umuahia, for a day of tributes.
On November 7, it will be the turn of the government and people of Ebonyi State to pay tribute to him, when his body is taken to Ebonyi State executive chambers for be another lying in state.
There will be a Requiem Mass and a wake at his country home later that day.
Onu who was also former Minister of Science and Technology, died on April 8 this year at 73 years, after a brief sickness.
He was the first chairman of the Conference of Nigeria elected governors, which is today known as Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), as well as National Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) in 2010.
Onu was conferred with a national honour of Commander of the Order of Niger (CON).
