Worried by the incessant kidnapping of road users and killing of farmers in the state forest, the Ondo State government has directed the setting up of Amotekun Rangers to put an end to the incessant killings of farmers by suspected herdsmen.
The Rangers, to be known as Amot, would also help prevent kidnapping at border towns and roads in the state.
The State Commander of the State Security Network Agency codenamed Amotekun Corps, Chief Adetunji Adeleye announced this to newsmen in Akure while parading nine suspected criminals.
According to him, training of Amotekun Forest Rangers has commenced as directed by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and they would be deployed to strategic locations in the state.
Adeleye said the ‘Amot Rangers’ was established in line with the Ondo State Livestock Rearing and Grazing Regulation and Ranches Establishment Law of 2021 (as amended).
He assured residents of the state that the new Amotekun unit would focus on addressing the current security threats posed by the influx of criminal elements, especially in the forests in and around communities in Akoko/Ose/Owo areas and other black spots across the state.
Adeleye noted that the AMOT Rangers would be residing and working in the border towns of Kogi, Edo, and Ekiti states, as well as forest reserves in the state.
His words, ‘Given Mr. Governor’s directives, we are immediately establishing six major control points for a special unit of the Amotekun corps that is coded ‘Amot Rangers.’ The ‘Amot Rangers’. will leave and stay in the forests to control the excesses of these miscreants causing trouble in Ondo State.
“These six control points cut across the troubled borders around Edo, Kogi, Kwara, and Ekiti states. In the last 72 hours, men of the Ondo State Security Network had combed every nook and cranny of the four local governments in Akoko, and we’ve been able to flush out the miscreants.”
On the nine suspects paraded, the Amotekun Commander said two of them were apprehended for attempting to kill private security guards with guns during the robbery, and others were nabbed for snatching okada.
Adeleye said James Amos and Moses Ponsack, aged 30 and 21, were arrested on charges of robbery, attempted murder, and theft of diesel. Also, he said Boboye Matthew, 18, and Boboye Lekan, who specialize in stealing, dismantling, and selling Okada, were arrested.
He said Rabiu Mogaji, Daouda Alassin, and Godwin Isaac were picked from different locations for the stealing of generators and phones when owners were not available. He said Azubuike Okafor Patti was arrested in the act of breaking into houses when the owner had gone to work.
He added that Isiaka Audu was arrested for stealing motorcycles and tubers of yams.
