The Federal Government has formed a 10-member committee to enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling of July 11, 2024, which grants financial autonomy to Local Governments in Nigeria.
The committee was announced by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), on Tuesday in Abuja.
Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, will chair the Inter-Ministerial Committee.
Members of the committee include the Minister of Finance, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, the Accountant General of the Federation, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and representatives from the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission, State Governors, and Local Governments.
“The committee’s primary objective is to ensure that local governments are granted full autonomy, enabling them to operate effectively without interference from state governments,” Imohiosen stated.
He added that this move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to upholding the constitutional provisions that recognize local governments as the third tier of government.
