On Monday, the Canadian government announced significant changes to its immigration policies, introducing stricter regulations that will reduce the number of temporary foreign workers allowed into the country.
This shift comes as Canada faces its highest population growth in over five decades, largely due to immigration, which has contributed to a rise in unemployment and pressure on housing and social services.
Under the new regulations, a ban on temporary foreign worker permits for low-wage positions in cities with unemployment rates of 6 percent or higher will be reinstated.
Additionally, the number of temporary foreign workers entering Canada will be capped at 65,000 annually, reducing the share of temporary migrants in the population from 6.2 percent to 5 percent.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller emphasized that Canada’s migration policies must adapt to the changing economic landscape and a tightening job market, stating, “We won’t hesitate to take additional measures if necessary.”
The updated rules also limit permits for low-wage jobs to one year, down from the previous two years.
Certain sectors, such as agriculture, health care, and construction, will be exempt from these changes.
Furthermore, the proportion of temporary foreign workers an employer can hire will be reduced to pre-pandemic levels, falling from 20 percent to 10 percent.
The new rules will take effect on September 26.
