The Vice-Chancellor of University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof Folasade Ogunsola has expressed deep concern over the rate of dependency, entitlement mentality and moral bankruptcy among the teeming youths in the country, saying these vices must without further delay be nipped in the bud to avert a disastrous future.
She disclosed this in her address, titled: “Prepare for the World Beyond UNILAG Walls,” where she commended the outgoing student-leaders of the university for their good character and quality leadership, particularly their cooperation with the university management in sustaining peace and tranquility on campus.
She also applauded the student leaders for providing quality leadership all through their tenure, a feat, which according to her, lends credence to the university management’s belief in the capacity of students to excel if and when given the opportunity and enabling environment to thrive.
Prof Ogunsola, who described leadership at every level as a “challenging task” especially when viewed against the backdrop of fast declining moral values and scarce resources, noted that these challenges have continued to hinder the pace of attainable growth and quality of followership in the society.
Hence, she reiterated the commitment of the university management towards fostering stronger interaction with students while grooming them into “fit-for-purpose workforce” to drive national and global development.
The Vice Chancellor, while reminiscing on her university days as a student of the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), recalled with nostalgia, the assurances, opportunities and privileges which comes with being a university student, as well as the responsibility, values and strength of character which the society conferred on every individual as against the present prevalent culture of corruption, outright irresponsibility and over-reliance on the government for survival.
Thus, Prof Ogunsola lauded the paradigm shift in thinking and ongoing campaign for moral re-orientation across different strata, even as she challenged the outgoing student-leaders to see their sojourn in the 62-yearold university as a preparatory class for the real world.
“Therefore, I want to implore you to approach the next phase of your lives with utmost sense of responsibility, diligence and good courage, re-examine your self-worth, shun vices and avoid short cuts which could spell doom for you in future,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
