As part of efforts to enhance basic education and literacy in the country, the Rotary Club of Arepolongbridge has donated textbooks to Arepo Primary School, in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The Rotary Club said the essence of the reading is to promote the reading culture among primary school pupils in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, the President of the Rotary Club, Dr Olufunke Ayeni said the essence of coming to the school is to commemorate basic education and Literacy Month.
She said Rotary is a culture and every month to celebrate basic education and literacy.
“We are happy to read with the pupils, give them career talk and present their textbooks. It was interesting reading with the pupils and educating them about careers, they also told us what they wanted to become when they were done.
“It is going to be a continuous project. Because it’s part of the rotary, the pupils were happy when we were doing the reading with them. We want to inculcate the reading culture and catch them young.
“As we have donated the books to them, we want them to go back to the library to pick the books and read them more and get a better understanding and improve their reading. And to also help them in their writing and speaking skills, these will go a long way. We donated eight hundred exercise books and literature books to the pupils.”
The District Governor, Rotarian Tayo Egunjobi said Rotary is doing this to build the confidence of the pupils in reading, speaking and writing skills, that’s why the textbooks and literature books were given to them.
As you can see the pupils were happy after receiving the exercise books and the literature books. It is our culture in rotary every September tagged ‘Basic Education and Literacy Month, where we better the lives of people around us especially the pupils in school and that is exactly what we have done today to the pupils.
“I was amazed when the pupils were reading the literature books that were given to them, the pupils got engrossed with the literature and they didn’t want us to leave again. The most important thing is for us to increase their reading culture, because if they don’t read they can learn.
“We told the pupils that the best way to excel in their education is to read regularly and review what they’re taught in the class. Most of the pupils are not educated and they speak local languages to them at home, with time the pupils are going to learn and read better.”
“I want to appreciate the donor on behalf of the pupils, their parents and the Local Government for the books donated to the pupils.”
Meanwhile, Rotarian Faith Ebije educated the pupils to be of good behaviour at home and in school and urged them to read their books well.
She urged the pupils in the school to read well and be focused on what they want to become in life. She prays for them to achieve their purpose in life.
