Nigerian striker Victor Boniface is poised to continue his excellent form as Bayer Leverkusen faces Holstein Kiel today, with his sights set on the Super Eagles’ African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya next weekend.
Boniface was an integral member of the Die Werkself side that won the Bundesliga last season, finishing as top scorer. He has continued the goalscoring form this season.
He has been in scintillating form for Leverkusen, contributing four goals and three assists in just seven matches across all competitions this season.
His latest moment of brilliance came in the Champions League earlier this week when he scored the only goal in Leverkusen’s 1-0 victory over AC Milan.
As Leverkusen prepares to face Kiel in their upcoming fixture, Boniface’s confidence will be high, and all eyes will be on the Nigerian forward to see if he can replicate his midweek performance.
His consistency and knack for delivering in crucial moments have made him an integral part of Xabi Alonso’s attacking setup.
Leverkusen manager Alonso has praised Boniface’s work ethic and dedication to improving his game, citing the striker’s rapid development since joining the Bundesliga outfit and has compared him with legendary Ivorian Didier Drogba.
He highlighted Boniface’s strengths but pointed out facets of his game that require improvements, including aggressiveness.
“He has many qualities that could make him as formidable as Drogba,” Alonso said. “His strength and the difficulties he creates for defenders are remarkable.”
“He’s exceptional in tight spaces and thrives around the box,” Alonso added. “But he needs to be more assertive in attacking the box when opportunities arise.
“It’s a process. We need to guide him, push him, and help him make better decisions when it matters most.”
Considering Holstein Kiel’s poor form this season and their defensive frailty, it is difficult to see how they avoid defeat.
Bayer Leverkusen also boast an exceptional home record, and it would not be surprising if they managed to score multiple goals today with Boiface expected to be at the centre of the show.
With Boniface hitting top form, his recent displays could also boost his confidence ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya next week. Should he maintain his current momentum, Boniface may play a pivotal role for the Super Eagles as they aim to secure their qualification to the continental showpiece.
The 23-year-old will likely lead the line as first-choice Victor Osimhen is unlikely to feature in the match after he suffered an injury that would keep him out of action for about six weeks.
Boniface started both games against Benin Republic and Rwanda but couldn’t hit the bull’s eye as Osimhen and Ademola Lookman took the shine.
With Osimhen doubtful Boniface will be keen on registering his first goals for the Super Eagles and will like to be in top shape for the game by signing off at his club with a top-rated show today.
