A former governor of Zamfara State, Alhaji Abdul’aziz Yari, has donated 240 trucks of food items to members of the All Progressives Congress, Internally Displaced Persons, orphans and other categories of the underprivileged persons in their state as Ramadan Welfare Package.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the items include rice, maize, sugar and millet.
The distributions, which took place on Sunday in Talata-Mafara town, Talata-Mafara local government area, was chaired by the National Chairman of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, represented by the APC North-East, Zonal Vice Chairman, Alhaji Salihu Mustafa.
Yari said the annual gesture was aimed at cushioning hardship among people of the state, especially during the Ramadan fast.
He said out of the 240 trucks of food items, 140 would be distributed to the 14 local government areas of the state, 10 trucks per each LGA.
“Thirty-two trucks are for IDPs, 12 trucks for orphans, 10 trucks for groups and associations and 46 trucks for Islamic scholars and other underprivileged people, among others,” he said.
Yari urged the distribution committees to ensure justice and fairness.
In his remarks, Governor Bello Matawalle, represented by his deputy, Hassan Nasiha, commended Yari for the gesture.
Matawalle noted that the gesture was in line with the manifesto of the APC.
“You know the APC is the party of grassroots people. I am appealing to those given responsibility to distribute the items to make sure that it reaches the targeted beneficieries,” the governor said.
Meanwhile, the Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society has announced plans to feed 2,000 persons daily in the spirit of Ramadan in order to maximise the rewards of the holy month.
The Chief Imam of the society, Fuad Adeyemi, disclosed this at the 19th National Unity Ramadan Lecture on Sunday in Abuja.
The theme for this year’s event was, “Ramadan Lesson: Inspiration for Reform.”
The chief Imam said, “Let me tell you, over the years, the first day of Ramadan usually recorded a relatively low turnout and will peak by the fourth or fifth day of Ramadan.
“We were marvelled this year, we prepared 1,000 meals and we were surprised that the first-day turnout was over 2,000, meaning this is a challenge, but we have a firm belief in Allah, that with you, the challenge will be surmountable.”
