Traders of UTC Market at Area 10 Garki, a popular printing hub in Abuja, have protested planned demolition of shops in the market by Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
The traders, who marched to AMAC, said the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) had moved in equipment to demolish the market.
The shops owners said that they were not informed of the demolition to enable them moved their goods and property out of the market.
During the protest, the traders carried placards of various inscriptions and sang solidarity songs, but security officers attached to the AMAC denied them entry into the premises.
Addressing the protesters, the supervisory councillor for Special Duties in the AMAC, Mr. Emmanuel Inyang asked them to go about their business as they await FCTA’s intervention.
He said: “We as a government can only intervene on behalf of you, as those who voted for us.
“Immediately the chairman comes back. He will be fully briefed, and the chairman will not forget to reach out to your leaders for an intervention.”
