A 36-year-old commercial motorcyclist, identified as Ibrahim Adamu, was allegedly shot dead by a security guard, in Akure, the Ondo State capital. According to sources, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Alagbaka axis of Akure metropolis, when the security guard accosted the deceased.
One of the sources, who was a close friend of the late Adamu, said after he was stopped by the security guard, the deceased explained that he was coming from a friend’s house, and during the interrogation, other security men attached to different houses came out to identify him.
The friend of the deceased, who craved anonymity said: “Suddenly, one of the security men shot into the air, which scared the people, and they fled.
“But the deceased and I did not run, we stayed, but one of the security men shot him in the chest, and he died instantly.” Another witness, Mrs. Safira Saliu said: “The deceased came to our house to eat after he closed from work for the day. He was an Okada rider. Later, he went out to sleep at his friend’s place because my family uses one room.
“My husband, who went with him, came back at about 1:30 a.m. to inform me that the deceased (Adamu) had been shot dead.
“The culprits took to their heels after the incident, and the kinsmen of the deceased have destroyed the chairman’s house because the culprit went to his house to inform him that they had killed somebody before they ran away, but the man did not do anything.
“For some hours, the corpse of the deceased was laid on the ground where he was shot, and his people did not allow any policeman or anybody else to intervene while they demanded the arrest of the culprits.”
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, said investigation had begun over the killing of the deceased.
She said: “It happened in the early hours of Sunday. We have not really pointed out the reason for the killing. Our men are still on the case, trying to ensure peace and stability return to the area.”
